The job description for faculty at research universities involves multiple responsibilities: teaching and mentoring, service to the university and community, and research and scholarship. Teaching and service duties often involve deadlines and therefore can become somewhat routine. Research and scholarship responsibilities, however, have fewer deadlines and an open structure. For this reason, they may become secondary tasks that faculty ignore or postpone. This creates a challenge for research administrators.
